THE HIRST BROTHERS: NON-PROFIT
The passion for fighting blindness was fostered from a deep personal connection to the disability. The youngest Hirst Brother, Jake, lives with a vision disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa.
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) describes a group of genetic disorders that damage light-sensitive cells in the retina, leading to gradual vision loss over time as the cells die off. While the condition is classified as a “rare disease,” it is one of the most common inherited diseases of the retina, affecting between 1 in 3500 Canadians. (Dr. Chad Andrews and Dr. Mary Sunderland, 2018)
In 2019 the Brothers decided to utilize their passion for jamming and performing live music with a goal of raising funds for vision research, thus creating the annual Concert for the Blind.
THE HIRST BROTHERS: ORIGINAL MUSIC
After years of playing covers together, the brothers started writing their own music in 2020 while planning the Concert for the Blind events.
Growing up, creativity was always highly encouraged, and the brothers have started to put more focus into developing songs to showcase their love for music, artistry, and the passion for playing live music. In early 2021, the Hirst Brothers released their first EP; Groove Town, which also featured their first professional music video for “Nah!” which was nominated and considered a finalist for the 4th Annual Canadian Independent Music Awards by Dropout Entertainment.
Towards the back half of the year, the Hirst Brothers launched a podcast to share their love of the independent musicians’ journey with the world. Each episode of the Hirst Brothers New Music Review showcases 3 indie artist’s songs from around the world, where the Brothers review, rate and provide feedback in a uniquely entertaining way. The show has also provided a platform for the Brothers to tell stories, reminisce on old memories and share some of the breathtaking unreleased footage they’ve gathered over years of travel, concerts, and content creation.
